Meaning of Zakat

Zakat is an Arabic word which means “to purify”. By Islamic belief, every Muslims have to take out a certain amount of money for poor which purify the wealth. Zakat is based on the wealth possessed by one. Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is obligatory for every Muslim to donate the amount of zakat. The amount of zakat to be paid depends on the amount of money and type of assets possessed by an individual. Zakat is additionally payable on agricultural products, precious metals, minerals and livestock.

Zakat is usually payable on assets acquired during the one lunar year. Usually, people paid zakat during Ramadan. As per Islamic norms, zakat is given to those living without a livelihood or who cannot make the basic requirement, wayfarers, stranded traveller. Nowadays people contribute their zakat amount to Non-profit organisation to help needy and poor.
